Two Minnesota Democratic lawmakers were shot in their homes early Saturday in what authorities call a “targeted” attack. Former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, while State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife survived a similar shooting. Police are searching for a suspect dressed as a police officer who left behind a manifesto naming additional potential targets.

Following the news, former President Donald Trump issued a statement: “Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!”

Online, Trump supporters promoted a conspiracy theory that Democrats orchestrated the attack in retaliation. They cited the lawmakers’ recent opposition to party lines—particularly votes against healthcare for undocumented immigrants.

“This is the direct result of the dem politicians’ violent and hateful rhetoric,” one user posted, while another claimed, “Probably a lunatic Democrat…” Authorities have not confirmed any political motive.
