Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington on Monday for high-stakes talks with U.S. President Donald Trump and several European leaders, as momentum builds toward a potential peace deal with Russia.

Trump has insisted that Zelensky must accept some of Moscow’s conditions, including ceding Crimea and ruling out NATO membership, for the war to end. “The Constitution of Ukraine makes it impossible to give up territory or trade land,” Zelensky said Sunday, stressing Kyiv’s red lines.

According to U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled readiness to allow Western security guarantees for Ukraine and made concessions on possible “land swaps.” Witkoff said Trump has shifted away from threats of new sanctions on Russia, focusing instead on a lasting peace framework.

European leaders are expected to join Zelensky at the White House for multilateral discussions. Zelensky has emphasized that any settlement must include stronger security guarantees than those that “didn’t work” in the past.
