Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday threatened punitive tariffs on BRICS and its partners, including Nigeria, over what he called “anti-American policies.”

Brazil’s president and BRICS chair, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, had criticised Trump’s global tariff hikes, saying: “If international governance does not reflect the new multipolar reality of the 21st century, it is up to BRICS to help bring it up to date.”
Nigeria joined BRICS in January 2025 and could face Trump’s proposed additional 10% tariff, having already been hit with a 14% reciprocity tariff in April.
