President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a 90-day negotiation period with Mexico following a phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, but said the current 25% tariffs would remain in effect during that time.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the conversation as “very successful in that, more and more, we are getting to know and understand each other.”
Trump emphasized that the tariffs were linked to his efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking into the United States. He stated that imports from Mexico, including automobiles, would continue facing a 25% tariff, while copper, aluminum, and steel would be taxed at 50%.
The announcement marks a continuation of Trump’s aggressive trade policy, with Mexico now under pressure to negotiate new terms amid steep import taxes.
The White House has not released additional details about the negotiation framework or specific demands from either side. Talks are expected to continue over the next three months.
