President Donald Trump said on Saturday that his relationship with Tesla CEO Elon Musk is likely over, adding there would be “serious consequences” if Musk backs Democratic candidates opposing the GOP’s proposed budget bill.
“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview. Pressed on specifics, Trump declined to elaborate. “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.”
Trump confirmed he has no intention of mending ties with Musk after their recent public falling-out. Asked if their relationship is finished, Trump replied, “I would assume so, yeah.”
The rift follows Musk’s sharp criticism of the GOP-led spending bill, culminating in a series of now-deleted social media posts attacking Trump. One included a reference to Trump’s past connection to Jeffrey Epstein, which Trump dismissed as “old news.”
Trump accused Musk of being “disrespectful to the office of the President” and said he has no plans to speak with him. “I’m too busy doing other things.”
Despite the spat, Trump remains confident the bill will pass before July 4, saying the feud has only strengthened GOP unity: “The Republican Party has never been united like this before.”
