Just 19 days into his second term, Trump announced that he would be firing the board of the Kennedy Center – named for the late Democratic president – and naming himself chairman.
President Donald Trump struck a defiant tone Wednesday night at the Kennedy Center, dismissing backlash over cast boycotts of Les Misérables. “I couldn’t care less. Honestly, I couldn’t,” Trump told reporters as he entered with First Lady Melania Trump. “All I do is run the country well.” Despite prior reports that only understudies would perform for the president, a source close to interim Kennedy Center executive director Richard Grenell told the Daily Mail, “It was a fake news from CNN from the beginning – all anonymous sources.”
The Trumps, accompanied by Vice President J.D. Vance and wife Usha, were met with a mix of cheers, a “USA” chant, and some boos. Protesters, including drag queens, gathered nearby as a symbolic gesture of dissent.
Trump’s visit follows his controversial decision in February to fire the Kennedy Center board just 19 days into his second term, appointing himself chairman of the institution, which traditionally honors American artistic contributions and is named after a former Democratic president.
