A 9-year-old boy was killed and two other children were injured after a pickup truck struck them near Felix Botello Elementary School in Dallas on May 22.

Police said the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on South Marsalis Avenue.

Dallas Police Assistant Chief Catrina Shead confirmed that Jose Garcia Ledesma, 9, died from his injuries. His twin sister Keyla and another child were hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Their mother, Deyaneira Ledesma, told KXAS-TV she was walking the children home when the crash occurred, noting they were not at a crosswalk.

“My little angel,” she said, describing Jose as her “greatest love” and “everything.” A vigil was held May 23 at the school.

The driver stopped at the scene and was not speeding, according to police.

“It’s not so much the kids. It’s the cars,” said parent Cynthia Rocha, urging safety improvements on the busy street.
