Newark mourns a 10-year-old boy and 21-year-old woman killed in a weekend mass shooting; three others remain injured.
A New Jersey neighborhood was rocked over the weekend when a mass shooting left a 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman dead, with three others injured. Police in Newark said gunfire erupted around 7 PM, with witnesses reporting rapid shots and panicked screams. One woman recalled hearing “more than six rounds and a lot of screaming” before officers secured the scene.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the deaths of the boy and young woman, while three others—including an 11-year-old boy and men aged 19 and 60—remain in stable condition.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called it a “dark and devastating day,” adding, “Our city mourns the loss of the baby, and the depraved and senseless killing of a 21-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy taken from their parents as their young lives were just blossoming.”
Authorities have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and are urging the gunman to surrender.
