Caruana Galizia, 53, was driving near her home when a car bomb detonated, killing her. She had been reporting on alleged corruption in Maltese political and business circles
A Maltese jury on Tuesday sentenced Jamie Vella and Robert Agius to life in prison for supplying the bomb that killed investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017.
Caruana Galizia, 53, was driving near her home when a car bomb detonated, killing her. She had been reporting on alleged corruption in Maltese political and business circles and was facing over 40 libel suits at the time of her death. Her murder sparked outrage across Europe and mass protests in Malta.
Vella and Agius were found guilty last week and received the maximum sentence.
The trial also addressed the 2015 killing of lawyer Carmel Chircop. George Degiorgio and Adrian Agius were convicted of that crime and also sentenced to life in prison.
In 2022, George and Alfred Degiorgio pleaded guilty to Caruana Galizia’s murder and received 40-year prison terms. Vincent Muscat, who admitted guilt in 2021, was sentenced to 15 years and testified after receiving a presidential pardon for Chircop’s murder.
Yorgen Fenech, a businessman, remains free on bail awaiting trial for alleged involvement in Caruana Galizia’s assassination.
