Night sweats severe enough to soak bedding may be associated with cancers such as lymphoma, leukaemia, and kidney cancer.
Night sweats and insomnia, while often overlooked, may be early warning signs of cancer, according to Cancer Research UK.
These symptoms, though not definitive indicators, can sometimes point to serious underlying conditions—especially when they deviate from a person’s normal sleep patterns.
“There are over 200 types of cancer, and symptoms vary widely depending on location,” experts say. However, some signs, such as very heavy sweating during sleep or persistent insomnia, can be more general—and easier to miss.
The NHS notes that night sweats severe enough to soak bedding may be associated with cancers such as lymphoma, leukaemia, and kidney cancer.
Meanwhile, persistent insomnia—especially when paired with pain, anxiety, or fatigue—could also stem from cancer or its treatment side effects.
“It’s important to be aware of what is normal for you and speak to your doctor if you notice any unusual changes or something that won’t go away,” advises Cancer Research UK.
While these symptoms can be caused by less severe conditions, doctors urge vigilance. Any unexpected or prolonged change in sleep should prompt medical consultation, as early detection significantly improves outcomes.
