U.S. appeals court upholds extension of Trump-era tariffs

Preserving Trump’s sweeping tariffs while the appeals process is ongoing ‘would cause irreparable harm’ to businesses and consumers across the country

A U.S. federal appeals court has ruled that former President Donald Trump’s global tariffs will remain in effect while the case is reviewed on an expedited track. The decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit extends a temporary reprieve for the Trump administration, which is challenging a lower court’s ruling that blocked the sweeping levies.

Arguments are scheduled for July 31, suggesting the tariffs will remain in place for at least two more months. The court cited “issues of exceptional importance” in its decision to fast-track the case.

The U.S. Court of International Trade previously ruled in May that Trump overstepped his authority by imposing broad tariffs, including separate duties on Canada, Mexico, and China.

Trump, who reinstated the tariffs after returning to office in January, called the decision a “great and important win for the US.”

Opponents argue the tariffs “would cause irreparable harm” to businesses and consumers nationwide.
