In a statement on Thursday, U.S. officials said the change was part of a global review of visa reciprocity, rooted in “technical and security benchmarks.”
The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified that its decision to reduce the validity period of most nonimmigrant visas for Nigerians is unrelated to Nigeria’s foreign policy or BRICS ties.
In a statement on Thursday, U.S. officials said the change was part of a global review of visa reciprocity, rooted in “technical and security benchmarks.”
“This reduction is not the result of any nation’s political alignment or policy decisions,” the Mission said.
“Rather, it is based on technical and security benchmarks that guide how U.S. visas are used around the world.”
The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to strong bilateral ties with Nigeria.
“We value our longstanding partnership with Nigeria and remain committed to working closely with the Nigerian public and government officials to help them meet those criteria and benchmarks. Our goal is to ensure safe, lawful, and mutually beneficial travel between our nations,” it stated.
The Mission urged Nigerians to rely on official channels for information.
