U.S. Congressman Bill Huizinga criticized Nigeria’s government for downplaying targeted attacks on Christians and urged swift, decisive action to prevent another humanitarian tragedy.
U.S. Congressman Bill Huizinga has expressed deep concern over what he described as the Nigerian government’s lack of seriousness in tackling the ongoing attacks on Christian communities.
According to a report from DAILYPOST, the lawmaker faulted Abuja’s “dismissive” response to the crisis, saying the pattern of violence shows clear signs of coordination and targeting.
Huizinga warned that the United States must act promptly to avert another large-scale atrocity in Africa, drawing parallels to “past global failures in Rwanda and South Sudan.”
He revealed he had personally spoken with survivors and religious leaders who felt “targeted” in repeated attacks.
“What I’m concerned about in particular is, you look at the Fulani and the radicalized Islamists, how they are attacking both moderate Muslims as well as the Christians,” he said. “They feel very much targeted. Because of that, the US response has been swift.”
The Congressman called on the Nigerian government to outline concrete measures to protect citizens and reduce violence, stressing that Nigeria’s stability and economic future were vital to West Africa.
“I’m not convinced that the Nigerian government has taken the situation seriously,” he added.
