“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident,” CBP stated.
The United States has issued a stern warning to Green Card holders, including Nigerians, stating that those with criminal histories risk losing their residency status and facing deportation.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in a notice released Tuesday, reminded lawful permanent residents that immigration privileges could be revoked if national laws are violated.
“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident,” CBP stated.
The agency added: “Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right. Our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused.”
CBP noted that returning residents with prior convictions may also face mandatory detention at U.S. ports of entry, alongside immigration removal proceedings.
The warning follows growing scrutiny of immigration policies amid heightened enforcement rhetoric, especially under conservative political leadership.
CBP reaffirmed its commitment to “protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders and enhancing the nation’s economic security.”
