U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Mexico and Ecuador this week with immigration and cartel-related issues expected to dominate discussions. The State Department said the visit is part of efforts to strengthen U.S. influence in the region. “The Mexico and Ecuador visits are aimed at combating organized crime, stemming illegal immigration and countering Chinese influence in the region,” the department stated.

This will be Mr. Rubio’s third trip to Latin America since becoming secretary of state earlier this year. Analysts say the visits signal the administration’s intent to deepen ties with regional partners while addressing security challenges and migration pressures on the U.S. southern border.

Rubio, who has emphasized regional cooperation, is expected to meet with top officials in both countries. The trip comes as the administration seeks to build coalitions against transnational crime and curb the growing role of external actors like China.
