WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is considering a major expansion of its travel ban, potentially restricting entry to citizens from 36 additional countries — including 25 in Africa — according to a Washington Post report.

An internal memo signed Saturday by Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlines proposed visa restrictions or bans on countries that fail to meet newly established security benchmarks. Key U.S. partners such as Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, and Djibouti are among those listed.

The proposed measures cite reasons such as unreliable identity documents, high visa overstay rates, corruption, and “antisemitic and anti-American activity.”

“This expansion affects not only foreigners but U.S. citizens. Families will be separated because of this travel ban,” said Stephen Yale-Loehr, immigration law professor at Cornell University.

Governments have until June 18 to submit action plans or risk sanctions, including full travel restrictions. Countries may also avoid penalties by accepting deportees or signing “safe third country” deals.
