UBEC partners with a US firm to provide 47 million laptops and tablets for Nigerian schools in a nationwide digital education drive.
The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with US-based Digital Learning Network (DLN) to roll out 47 million laptops and tablets under Nigeria’s National Digital Education Transformation Project.
Signed in Abuja, the MoU targets pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary schools, aiming to improve access and quality of learning. The initiative will be fully funded through private investments involving Deloitte, UBA, Zenith Bank, and other partners.
UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, said the project will “transform learning in schools, especially in remote and underserved communities,” describing it as one of the most significant edtech initiatives globally.
Devices will come preloaded with curriculum-based content, supported by 5G, local telecoms, and Starlink to ensure 50 Mbps broadband in rural areas. DLN President Thomas Larmena called it “the largest digital education project in Africa,” adding that the rollout has started in Akwa Ibom, with more states to follow.
