App-based transport drivers across Nigeria plan to stage a national strike on May 1, 2025—International Workers’ Day—protesting what they call “decades of exploitation” by major ride-hailing platforms like Uber, Bolt, Lagride, Indrive, and Rida.

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), through its spokesperson Steven Iwindoye, accused the companies of treating drivers as “disposable tools” while profiting massively.

“For too long, companies like Uber, Bolt… have ignored our concerns and disrespected our rights,” the union said, calling for a 24-hour shutdown of ride-hailing services.

“Despite our efforts to engage in dialogue, these companies have consistently prioritised their profits over our well-being.”

The strike, described as the beginning of a long-term struggle, will be followed by a list of demands and broader engagements with media and labor groups.

“This is a global call to action… a united force that won’t be ignored,” the statement concluded.
