Uganda has agreed to a temporary deal with the US to host rejected asylum seekers who cannot return home.
Uganda has reached an agreement with the United States to receive migrants who fail to secure asylum in America, the country’s foreign ministry announced Thursday.
In a statement on X, Uganda’s foreign affairs permanent secretary, Vincent Bagiire, said the deal covers “Third Country Nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States, but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin.” He stressed that the plan was a “temporary arrangement,” though details on the number of migrants expected or the duration of their stay were not disclosed.
The development comes as Uganda, which already hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, faces increasing pressure on resources and infrastructure.
Officials said the arrangement reflects the country’s commitment to international humanitarian obligations while maintaining that consultations with relevant stakeholders are ongoing.
