Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Saturday sought nomination for a seventh term, a move that would bring him closer to five decades in power in .

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, the 80-year-old Ugandan leader revealed that he has collected presidential and chairmanship nomination forms from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) headquarters.

“I expressed my interest in running for both the position of presidential flag bearer and NRM party national chairman by picking up nomination forms at the NRM headquarters in Kyadondo,” Mr Museveni wrote.

Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, said the country has undergone significant transformation under his leadership. “Since 1986, Uganda has progressed through five stages of development, and the NRM aims for the country to become a $500 billion economy in the next five years,” he stated.

The veteran leader’s announcement signals a potential continuation of one of Africa’s longest-standing presidencies. Museveni has consistently credited his administration with ensuring stability and economic progress.

He has defied calls for his retirement, as critics warn that he has veered into authoritarianism with virtually no opposition, including within his governing National Resistance Movement party.
