UK eases rules to let foreign students transition to innovator founder visa without travelling out

Foreign students will be able to launch innovative businesses in the UK under a new visa pathway requiring endorsement, proof of growth potential, and periodic progress checks.

The UK government has approved a new pathway allowing foreign students to apply for the Innovator Founder visa if they plan to set up and run an innovative business in the country. The idea was proposed in an 82-page immigration White Paper released in May and received approval last month. The scheme replaces a similar provision under the now-closed start-up route.

Under the new rules, applicants must demonstrate that their business is “different from anything else on the market,” has potential for growth, and can create jobs while expanding into national and international markets. The visa takes effect on November 25 and is valid for three years, with no limits on extensions. Applicants may qualify for settlement after three years.

Requirements include endorsement by an approved body, meeting an English language standard, being at least 18, and having £1,270 in personal savings. Applicants must also meet endorsing bodies after 12 and 24 months to show progress.

The policy shift comes the same week foreign graduates were given 18 months to secure employment, down from two years. The Home Office said the changes taking effect on January 1, 2027, were necessary “to ensure graduates contribute effectively to the economy.”
