The United Kingdom has recorded its first baby born following a womb transplant, marking a major medical milestone. The historic birth was confirmed after a successful transplant carried out at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford.
The womb used in the procedure was donated by the mother’s sister, making the surgery the first of its kind in the UK to result in a live birth. The transplant was performed in early 2023, and the baby was delivered via caesarean section later that year.
“It was a very proud moment,” said Professor Richard Smith, the lead surgeon and chair of the charity Womb Transplant UK.
The mother, whose identity remains private, was born without a functioning womb but had intact ovaries, allowing for the use of her own eggs through IVF.
