The Federal Government, through Works Minister David Umahi, says it is constructing roads across Nigeria using advanced engineering methods that will allow them to last between 50 and 100 years.

The Federal Government has announced that its road projects will be built to last for 50 to 100 years, with the adoption of modern construction techniques and high-quality materials.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, made the declaration during an inspection of the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway rehabilitation, stating: “You cannot achieve a better California Bearing Ratio (CBR) by simply bringing laterite on the road. … We are insisting on milling, stabilising, and strengthening, rather than removing old asphalt layers and replacing them with new materials.”

He explained that instead of patching potholes, entire sections will be treated with stone bases or stabilised with cement; shoulders will be excavated, refilled, and compacted to prevent water damage.

Umahi added: “Wherever we have potholes within the carriageway, we don’t just patch. Our design now prioritises rigid pavement for major highways, the goal is to ensure that no section of the road fails prematurely.”

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammed Goronyo, affirmed the administration’s commitment under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to uplift infrastructure quality nationwide.
