Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has described some federal universities operating with fewer than 2,000 students as a waste of government resources. He cited a northern institution with fewer than 800 students but employing 1,200 staff, saying such inefficiencies undermine the purpose of public funding.
Alausa spoke while explaining the Federal Executive Council’s decision to impose a seven-year ban on establishing new federal tertiary institutions. He stressed that government funds would be better utilised in upgrading infrastructure, staffing, and expanding the capacity of existing institutions rather than running underpopulated ones.
