UNILAG clarifies fee changes, says no new hike implemented

UNILAG has denied claims of a fresh fee hike, explaining that recent changes on its student portal resulted from the integration of existing charges under the NELFund directive.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has denied reports of a fresh increase in undergraduate fees, attributing recent changes on the student payment portal to a directive from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund).

The clarification followed concerns raised by students on Tuesday over what appeared to be an upward review of fees.

In a statement on Wednesday, the university’s spokesperson, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the adjustments reflected the consolidation of charges previously paid at the faculty and departmental levels.

“This ensures that once students make payment through their official portal, no other payment will be collected at the faculty and departmental levels,” she explained.

A review of the payment advice by TheCable showed minor adjustments and new entries, including entrepreneurship (₦5,000), portal maintenance (₦15,000), and student insurance (₦1,250).

Alaga-Ibraheem maintained that the university had not introduced new fees. “What we have done is in the best interest of the students so that when they apply for NELFund, they get funding that covers every bill,” she said, adding that the integration ensures transparency and eliminates multiple payments.
