The University of Port Harcourt is mourning a 300-level student killed in an off-campus shooting allegedly involving security agents, prompting calls for justice from student leaders.

The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has mourned the death of a 300-level Computer Science student, Mr. Godwin Francis Akpakpan, who was fatally shot in an off-campus incident reportedly involving security personnel.

In a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, the university said the incident occurred outside campus grounds. “We expect a thorough investigation and the necessary actions to follow, in line with justice and the rule of law,” it stated.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) described the killing as “alleged murder,” claiming Akpakpan was arrested on April 16 during a stop-and-search operation by men in police uniform, and later shot in an altercation involving unidentified military personnel.

“No security agency has taken responsibility,” said NANS Rivers State JCC Chairman, Comrade Jokiel Gideon Chinonso. “We demand an immediate and transparent investigation into this killing.”

The university pledged cooperation with security agencies and urged calm while investigations proceed. Students, meanwhile, insist there will be no rest until justice is served.
