Manchester United pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks in their history, scoring twice in the final minute of extra time to defeat 10-man Lyon 5-4 at Old Trafford and secure a place in the Europa League semi-finals.
United, who had led 2-0 before collapsing to trail 4-2, looked destined for elimination. Fans began exiting the stadium when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty six minutes from time following a VAR check on a foul against Casemiro.
Moments later, Kobbie Mainoo curled in a stunning equaliser to level the tie, but United weren’t done. With penalties looming, Casemiro lofted a cross into the box, and makeshift striker Harry Maguire headed home the winner in front of a jubilant Sir Alex Ferguson.
“Football, Bloody Hell,” Ferguson’s famous quote from 1999, echoed in the minds of many as Maguire led celebrations. Lyon boss Ruben Amorim sprinted down the touchline in disbelief, reminiscent of Jose Mourinho’s 2004 antics.
“It was up there with the most famous games this stadium has ever seen,” a witness said, as United now face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final.
The team may fall short of past legends, but this performance will long be remembered among Old Trafford’s greatest nights.
