A Florida lawmaker has proposed renaming college roads after slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with penalties for noncompliance.
Florida State Representative Kevin Steele has introduced a bill mandating public universities and colleges in the state to rename campus roads after the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The legislation, filed as HB 113, would require all 40 state institutions to redesignate specific roadways in Kirk’s honor within 90 days of the law taking effect. Failure to comply would result in the withholding of state funds.
“State funds shall be withheld from any state university or Florida College System institution whose board of trustees fails to redesignate the roadway… within 90 days,” the bill states.
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated in September while speaking at Utah Valley University. Rep. Steele emphasized that the measure seeks to preserve Kirk’s legacy on campuses. “My goal with this bill is to continue his legacy through generations of students that will attend our schools and will be faced with many differing ideas,” he wrote on X.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also noted that Lake County already renamed a stretch of road as “Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway” following his death. The proposal, if passed, would expand that tribute statewide.
