UNN registrar Ngozi Nnebedum faces sanction for falsely confirming ex-minister Uche Nnaji’s forged degree as genuine.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has initiated disciplinary action against its registrar, Ngozi Nnebedum, for falsely confirming that disgraced minister Uche Nnaji graduated from the institution in 1985. Nnaji, who resigned as minister of innovation, science and technology on Wednesday, was exposed by Peoples Gazette for presenting forged UNN and NYSC certificates. In a 2023 email exchange, Mrs Nnebedum, under official letterhead, confirmed Nnaji’s degree in Microbiology/Biochemistry.

However, a new letter from the vice-chancellor’s office contradicted her claim, stating Nnaji never graduated. University sources said Nnebedum met privately with Nnaji before issuing her statement. When contacted, she said the letter “was written on my behalf, but we are working to clarify everything.” UNN officials described her actions as “a serious administrative offence” that embarrassed the institution. Nnaji’s downfall followed court proceedings that relied on Gazette reports of his alleged certificate forgery.
