US cuts Nigerian visas, blocks applicants planning childbirth in America

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the statement read.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to Nigerians seeking visas with the intent of giving birth in America to secure citizenship for their children.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the U.S. Mission in Nigeria made it clear that consular officers will deny visa applications if they suspect this motive.

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the statement read.

“Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”

This move aligns with President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, which includes efforts to end birthright citizenship—a policy currently facing legal challenges.

The announcement follows recent visa restrictions that slashed the validity of U.S. visas for Nigerian non-immigrant travelers from five years to just three months.

With stricter scrutiny at embassies and consulates, Nigerians hoping to leverage birthright citizenship for their children may find their plans thwarted before they even board a flight.
