U.S. Senate enters final stretch to pass Trump’s $4.5 trillion spending bill.
U.S. senators engaged in a grueling marathon session Tuesday as Republicans made a final push to pass President Donald Trump’s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The $4.5 trillion spending package aims to extend expiring tax cuts, ramp up military and border security spending, and fund mass deportation operations. It is expected to add approximately $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Republican tactics during the extended amendment session, stating, “They’ve got a lot of members who were promised things that they may not be able to deliver on. And so they’re just stalling.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt urged Republicans to “stay tough and unified.” Meanwhile, Trump defended the bill on social media as “perhaps the greatest and most important of its kind in history,” warning that failure would lead to “a whopping 68 percent tax increase, the largest in history.”
Republicans can afford only three defections to secure passage before the July 4 deadline.
