Utah governor says motive in Kirk shooting remains unclear, but suspect held left-leaning views

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination held leftist views and online radical influences, though investigators have yet to confirm a motive.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Sunday that investigators have not determined the motive behind the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk but noted the 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, held left-leaning beliefs and disliked the victim. “Clearly a leftist ideology,” Cox told NBC’s Meet the Press. He added on CNN that the information came from Robinson’s family and friends.

Robinson, who is “not cooperating,” was described as spending extensive time in “the deep, dark internet” and gaming culture, according to the governor. Ammunition used in the attack carried anti-fascist messages, including one casing engraved with “Hey, fascist! Catch!”

Kirk, 30, a Trump confidant and father of two, was fatally shot Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University. Robinson, a former honor student now enrolled in a technical college, will appear in court Tuesday.

Cox urged restraint in political rhetoric, saying, “If this was a radicalized MAGA person, I’d be saying that as well.”
