A married couple fired from the Vatican bank for violating a rule barring workplace marriages has been rehired following a negotiated settlement, the union for Vatican lay employees announced Nov. 12.
Silvia Carlucci and Domenico Fabiani, who filed a wrongful termination lawsuit in January, were dismissed four months after their August 2024 wedding. The union hailed the deal as “a victory of common sense,” though details on their return or new roles were not disclosed.
The couple, who have three children between them, said they refused to cancel their nuptials despite the new rule. “The emblematic case of Silvia and Domenico suggests that the application of labor law needs more solid foundations,” the union stated, noting the lack of financial support during their legal battle.
The Vatican’s labor procedures do not provide for legal fee reimbursement. The couple had earlier told The Associated Press they hoped Pope Francis would intervene.
