Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against dictatorship, dedicating the award to both the people of Venezuela and U.S. President Donald Trump.
“I dedicate the prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause,” she wrote on X.
The 58-year-old industrial engineer, barred from contesting the 2024 presidential election against President Nicolas Maduro, currently lives in hiding.
The Nobel Committee praised Machado as a “courageous defender of freedom,” while a White House spokesperson accused the committee of “placing politics over peace.”
It remains unclear whether Machado will attend the December 10 award ceremony in Oslo. Committee chair Joergen Watne Frydnes said the recognition aims to energize Venezuela’s opposition movement.
Machado is the first Venezuelan and sixth Latin American to win the Peace Prize, which carries a cash award of $1.2 million.Suggested headlines:
