Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, has died at 70, leaving behind a legacy of powerful stage and screen performances.

Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, fondly called Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 70. His death was confirmed on Friday by movie executive Seun Oloketuyi, who wrote on Instagram, “Popular actor Segun Remi popularly known as Chief Kanran died Friday morning. Details soon.”

A celebrated figure in the Yoruba film industry, Kanran was admired for his refined elegance, humour, and mastery in portraying authoritative roles. He began his career on stage in 1975, famously playing Kurunmi in Prof. Ola Rotimi’s play, and later featured in productions such as Ewe Orun, Efunsetan Aniwura, and Langbodo.

In a 2020 interview, Kanran revealed he left filmmaking due to industry politics, stating, “Some people in the industry see people like me as a threat because I will not do anything that is not professional.”

As of press time, details of his death remain undisclosed, and the family is yet to announce burial arrangements.
