Corey Coleman, 26, from Llanharan near Cardiff, suffered a spinal fracture while sexually abusing horses at Ynyscrug livery yard in Tonyrefail, Rhondda Cynon Taf, where he volunteered.
He continued visiting the stables after being hospitalised and fitted with a back brace.
Suspicious of his injury, stable owner Alex Hill reviewed CCTV footage and discovered Coleman using a mare to arouse a stallion, then engaging in sexual activity with the animal. RSPCA prosecutor Geraint Richards said the behaviour occurred on multiple dates, and children were often nearby.
Coleman pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to two stallions and failing to protect a mare. “The horses’ behaviour suggested this had gone on for many months,” said Mr Richards.
Coleman’s solicitor, Daniel Maggs, called it “a very unusual case,” noting Coleman’s embarrassment and injured reputation. He was handed a 12-week suspended sentence, 25 rehab days, and banned from handling horses for five years. The horses suffered no lasting injuries.
