The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted claims that the 2025 WASSCE was cancelled, labeling the viral report as ‘spurious’ and the work of ‘mischief-makers.’

Lagos, July 21, 2025 – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a viral report claiming the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), describing it as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Moyosola Adesina, WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, the examination body disowned the fake press release, which alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC had nullified the exams due to widespread malpractice and question paper leaks.

“The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025,” the statement read. “The WAEC management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the council.”

WAEC clarified that the examination proceeded without disruption and that marking had been completed. “The said examination has not been cancelled. As a matter of fact, the marking scripts of the said examination have just been concluded, and results will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025,” it added.

The council attributed the fake news to “mischief-makers bent on bringing the council to disrepute” and urged stakeholders to rely only on official WAEC channels for updates.

“All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement emphasized.

Candidates and the public have been advised to disregard the false report and await the official results release next month.
