“This is very embarrassing.”
“We… apologise for the discrepancies.”
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has released corrected results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, after discovering grading discrepancies.
Addressing journalists in Lagos on Friday, WAEC Nigeria Head, Dr. Amos Dangut, admitted that a wrongly assigned serialised code file during the marking of the English Language Objective Test led to incorrect scoring.
“With deep sorrow and regret, I… apologise for the discrepancies discovered in the grading of serialised papers. This is very embarrassing,” he said.
With the error fixed, 62.96% of candidates obtained five credits including English and Mathematics — a sharp improvement from the earlier reported 38.32%.
WAEC said results for 191,053 candidates remain withheld over alleged malpractice, while 205,916 have pending results due to technical issues.
The council urged affected state governments to settle outstanding debts so their candidates can access results, and assured the public it would prevent a recurrence.
