Former Minister of Police Affairs, Adams Maina Waziri, has claimed that late MKO Abiola and Bashir Tofa were not the preferred presidential candidates of Nigerians during the 1993 elections.

Speaking at the Second Posthumous Legacy Colloquium in Abuja on Thursday, held in honour of late media mogul Raymond Dokpesi, Waziri said Nigerians had originally favoured Adamu Chiroma, Shehu Musa Yar’adua, and Bamanga Tukur.

“Nigerians out of disappointment were forced to vote in 1993 for candidates not of their choice,” he said. “With due respect, Abiola was not the choice of Nigerians and neither was Bashir Tofa.”

He explained that voters were simply eager to remove the military from power.

On Dokpesi’s passing, Waziri remarked, “It was good he died at home. Otherwise, the controversy of his death… would have had dire consequences.”

He urged documentation of Dokpesi’s political contributions from 1999 to 2023.
