Weak local governance allows criminal recruitment – Bishop Johnson

Former US Army Captain Bishop Johnson (Retired) says weak and dysfunctional local governments in Nigeria are enabling criminal activities and worsening insecurity.

Former US Army Captain Bishop Johnson (Retired) has attributed the rising insecurity in Nigeria to weak local government institutions, stressing that “governance is a crucial part of any security strategy, but many local governments in the country are in a comatose state.”

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Johnson noted that ineffective local governments fail to provide essential services, leaving communities vulnerable to recruitment by criminal elements. He emphasized that security agencies alone cannot solve the problem and argued that past collaboration between effective local governments and traditional leadership minimized crime.

“Back in the days when local governments were functioning effectively, this country had minimal insecurity until we began to weaken those two institutions that brought us to where we are today,” he said.
