ASUU demands tangible proof of N50bn payment, rejecting Tinubu govt’s announcement as mere rhetoric.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has dismissed claims by the Tinubu administration that it released N50 billion to settle earned academic allowances, demanding verifiable evidence of payment.
ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, in an exclusive interview with SaharaReporters, stated that the union had only received verbal assurances from the government without any documentation or fund transfer. “We are aware of it, but until we see evidence, we won’t believe them,” Osodeke said, rejecting the narrative pushed by government spokespersons.
The Federal Ministry of Education had earlier announced the release of the funds, describing it as part of President Tinubu’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector. However, Osodeke questioned the inclusion of non-academic staff, stating, “Every union negotiates for its members. It is not a collective.”
The union insists on transparency, with Osodeke reiterating, “We only agreed verbally. We have not seen the money.” The prolonged academic session, attributed to government-ASUU cooperation, remains under scrutiny as lecturers await concrete proof of the disbursement.
