From 1 June, WhatsApp officially stopped functioning on several older smartphones, including iPhone 6, Galaxy S4, and 11 other models, due to an update in its system requirements.
According to the Economic Times, WhatsApp now requires iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1 and above. Devices like iPhone 5s, 6, 6 Plus, and Sony Xperia Z1 are no longer supported.
Meta explained that older operating systems limit the addition of new features such as stronger encryption and group controls. “Failure to comply will result in losing WhatsApp functions, including text messaging, voice calls, video calls, and status updates,” WhatsApp stated.
Users of iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and SE (1st gen) can retain access if they upgrade to iOS 15.8.4. Meta advised users to back up chats and switch to newer devices. A similar support cut is expected in 2027. Users can verify their OS version via their phone settings.
