The update, currently in beta, enables WhatsApp users to chat with people outside the platform without any additional tools.
WhatsApp is testing a major new feature that allows users to message people on other apps, according to Android Police reporting. The update, currently in beta, enables WhatsApp users to chat with people outside the platform without any additional tools.
The move is driven by Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires major tech platforms to support interoperability between services. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is being rolled out in select European regions, making it unavailable to users outside the continent for now.
Once enabled, users can exchange messages, images, videos, and voice notes with non-WhatsApp users. The chats will also be clearly separated from regular WhatsApp conversations. “It will be just like chatting with a friend through SMS,” the report said, adding that communication features may vary slightly between apps.
At present, only BirdyChat is supported, though more third-party apps are expected to join as developers adjust to comply with the DMA. The feature remains in beta testing on Android via the Google Play Store.
While this update could redefine messaging convenience and privacy, global users may need to wait longer before experiencing it.
