The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) began monitoring local council elections on Saturday, with its chair, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), visiting polling units alongside security agents and observers. Reports from various locations highlighted logistical problems. In Aga, Ikorodu, the absence of security operatives raised safety concerns, while some polling units lacked materials and LASIEC officials early on. A LASIEC staffer confirmed these issues, noting efforts by the chair to resolve them swiftly.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile had earlier promised a smooth process, saying LASIEC had taken “comprehensive steps in line with our constitutional mandate and electoral guidelines.” She assured voters of “a free, fair, credible, inclusive, and peaceful election.”
Voting is taking place across 13,325 polling units in 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs, with 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship positions contested. “The commission is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a successful election devoid of violence or intimidation,” she said. Meanwhile, low turnout was noted in areas like Ago.
