Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has stepped down as INEC Chairman after a decade in office, handing over to Ms. May Agbamuche-Mbu as acting head to enable a smooth leadership transition.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has stepped down to allow for the appointment of a new head of the commission.
Speaking at a handover ceremony in Abuja, Yakubu said his decision “is to pave way for the appointment of a new chairman” as provided by the Constitution. He formally handed over to Ms. May Agbamuche-Mbu, a national commissioner, who will serve in acting capacity.
Yakubu, who served for ten years, expressed gratitude to INEC staff, political stakeholders, and Nigerians for their support. “Together, we innovated and managed the commission’s enormous responsibilities, sometimes on the verge of breaking down,” he said.
He highlighted key achievements, including the digitization of voter registration, election monitoring, and result management. Agbamuche-Mbu, in her remarks, praised Yakubu’s “hard work and dedication,” pledging to uphold his standards and maintain the commission’s integrity.
