An increasing number of women are using testosterone treatments to address low libido and energy, despite the hormone lacking FDA approval for female use.
A growing number of women are turning to testosterone treatments as a remedy for low libido, mood, and energy, despite the lack of FDA approval for female use, according to a report from VOX.
The hormone, naturally produced in smaller quantities in women, is being embraced by celebrities like Halle Berry and discussed widely on TikTok.
While studies show that low doses can help postmenopausal women regain sexual drive, some women are using doses comparable to those taken by transgender people for hormone therapy. “They were toned. Women were having orgasms for the first time in years and years,” journalist Susan Dominus told Today, Explained.
Dominus noted that some women experience side effects such as irritability, facial hair growth, or hair loss. Because testosterone therapy isn’t FDA-approved for women, insurance doesn’t cover it, creating a lucrative market where clinics can charge thousands of dollars for high-dose pellets or injections.
The FDA’s reluctance to approve testosterone for women stems from limited long-term safety data and past concerns over breast cancer risk. Still, the off-label use continues to grow, driven by online influencers and wellness spas, according to the report.
