Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has accused protesting workers of being manipulated by politicians seeking to embarrass him over his development projects.

Speaking during a media chat on Thursday, Mr Wike dismissed the demonstrations as politically motivated.

“What I will not take is a threat. I will not be intimidated,” he said. “Because of achievement we have recorded, I will not listen to you.”

Workers shut the entrance to the FCT Administration office on Tuesday, demanding overdue promotions and welfare allowances.

Mr Wike claimed their grievances only emerged after he began approving promotions and commissioning projects.

“They didn’t get promotion before I came. They did kill anybody. Now that I came, they now know that promotion must be done,” he said.

He also criticised the protests, noting, “Now they lock the gate, but they are paying them a salary.”

Meanwhile, some pupils joined the demonstrations, urging the minister to pay teachers so schools could reopen.
