FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has flagged off the distribution of fertilizers at half price to farmers across Abuja’s six Area Councils. The initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity, stabilize food prices, and strengthen food security amid rising input costs.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commenced the distribution of fertilizers at 50 percent subsidized rates to farmers across the territory. The launch, held at the Arts and Culture Exhibition Pavilion in Garki, marks a strategic intervention to enhance food production and cushion the impact of rising agricultural costs.

Wike stated that 550 metric tonnes of assorted fertilizers, including NPK, urea, and gel variants, had been procured for verified farmers. “This initiative comes at the peak of the farming season. With these inputs, we aim to boost yields and ease the burden of rising food costs,” he said.

He stressed transparency in distribution, urging beneficiaries to use the fertilizers on their farms rather than selling them. Wike also encouraged youths to embrace agriculture, highlighting partnerships with JICA, IITA, FAO, the Leventis Foundation, and the World Bank to train farmers and reclaim degraded land.

The FCT Secretariat has also procured 3,500 knapsack sprayers to complement the fertilizer intervention, ensuring the support reaches genuine farmers.
