The FCTA signed agreements with two Chinese firms to execute the project.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Wednesday began installing integrated hybrid solar-powered streetlights across Abuja. The initiative aims to curb insecurity, reduce maintenance costs and end the city’s long-running power outages.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said the project followed years of losses to vandalism, cable theft and politically-driven contracts that left “almost 80 percent” of the capital in darkness. Agreements were signed in Beijing in 2024 with Chinese firms CGC and CCECC to deliver the project, which includes in-built surveillance to deter sabotage.
“This time, it won’t be business as usual. The companies will maintain the facilities for four to five years, and the technology will ensure vandals and cable thieves are caught,” Wike stated.
Minister of State Dr Mariya Mahmoud described the project as a step toward safety, sustainability and a Smart City vision. The seven-month scheme also forms part of Abuja’s preparations for its 50th anniversary in 2026.
