Wike’s loyalists in the PDP are reportedly opposing former President Jonathan’s return bid, instead pushing for Peter Obi as internal divisions deepen.

Fresh divisions have emerged in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, are reportedly opposing former President Goodluck Jonathan’s possible candidacy and instead backing Peter Obi.

According to Daily Trust, PDP leaders remain split over whether to field Jonathan, Obi, or Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in the next presidential race. Supporters of Jonathan argue that he is the strongest candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while others view both Jonathan and Obi as strategic choices because they could serve only one term, paving the way for a northern candidate in 2031.

“Many want Jonathan because he is easy to sell nationwide and has only one term left, which the North will find acceptable, but Wike’s men are against him. They are pushing Obi instead to block Jonathan,” a top PDP chieftain said.

Another party leader noted the crisis reflects “a deeper battle over the party’s control.”
